Ubisoft reportedly bids for Arkane Lyon as Microsoft weighs a sale or closure

Ubisoft, the French publisher behind Assassin’s Creed, has reportedly offered to buy Arkane Lyon, the Microsoft-owned French game developer behind Dishonored and Deathloop and now making Marvel’s Blade. Its bid is one of several possible alternatives to closure ahead of a December decision deadline, but the prospective buyer is also cutting projects and staff.

Several bids, no settled buyer
Ubisoft and at least two other gaming companies have submitted offers, according to an account citing Bloomberg’s reporting from people familiar with the negotiations. Ubisoft is the only bidder named. Microsoft is also reportedly considering selling the studio to its management, which would make Arkane independent.
A Microsoft spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company continued to explore options ahead of a December decision deadline, according to a separate account of the sale process. The proposals’ terms are unknown, and closure remains an option if no agreement is reached.
That timetable concerns a consultation process. Microsoft had already confirmed a one-month extension in October, saying it was exploring options including a partner to support the studio’s remaining development work. More time to negotiate does not itself secure a buyer or finance completion of Blade.
The attempted disposal forms part of restructuring at Xbox, Microsoft’s gaming business, involving layoffs and changes to its studio portfolio. It also reverses an earlier expansion: Microsoft completed its acquisition of ZeniMax Media, parent of games publisher Bethesda Softworks, in March 2021, bringing Arkane into Xbox alongside seven other development studios.
