Valve adds Steam release checks as game reviews take up to 12 business days
Valve is requiring developers to test more Steam features before submitting games, aiming to reduce repeat reviews as approval delays disrupt release plans.
- Valve says pre-release reviews take up to 12 business days, against a typical three to five days.
- Developers must run games through Steam for at least five minutes before submitting them.
- Valve is targeting repeat reviews, but has not established how quickly the changes will reduce waits.
Valve, the company operating the Steam game distribution platform, has added pre-submission requirements for developers as its approval queue stretches to as much as 12 business days. The changes put more checks on developers before Valve reviews their games, with the aim of catching basic faults that otherwise require another pass through the queue.
In its November 3 update, Valve said submissions for store-page and build review had increased significantly in recent months. It attributed much of the delay to re-reviews, according to the report on its announcement. Developers have already reported missing planned release dates because of lengthy approvals, making the backlog a launch-planning problem as well as a technical one. The reports specify business days for the current maximum but describe the typical window simply as three to five days; they do not support a precise multiple for the increase.

Testing the version customers actually install
The most basic new requirement is to launch the game using Steam’s green Play button and run it for at least five minutes. Valve says it sometimes receives builds that have never been played through Steam. Running an executable directly can work even when the configuration customers need to install and launch it through the platform is incomplete.
A detailed account of the Steamworks changes says any user’s playtime can satisfy the requirement. It must fall within the past seven days, or since the last build if that build was uploaded more than seven days ago. The test is intended to catch incorrect launch options and missing content depots—the packages containing game files.
