Honestly, it started like many things these days: I fell down a rabbit hole online. I stumbled across someone's video showcasing their silver collection and thought, "Wait, people just collect physical silver in their hands? That's a thing?"
There was something about it that resonated with me. I've always been somewhat into coins—like noticing the date or detail on change in my pocket—but this was different. This was intentional collecting, purposeful.
Then the other side hit me: silver is real money. Unlike stocks, retirement funds, or mutual funds, silver is not just a number on a screen. It's a physical asset with real value that has been used as currency for thousands of years.
With the current economic climate, rising prices, and the dollar buying less every year, having something tangible that holds value made sense to me. So, I bought my first ounce—a basic silver round. When it arrived and I held it in my hand, I was hooked.
Though I am not an expert, I've made enough mistakes and done enough research to share some key lessons I wish I knew from day one.
The spot price is the current market price for one ounce of silver. At the time of writing, it's around $80 an ounce. When buying silver, you pay a little above spot, called the premium.
Premiums vary widely depending on what you buy. A basic silver round from a regular dealer might be $2 or $3 over spot, while a fancy limited edition coin could be $15 or $20 over spot.
As a new stacker, your goal should be to minimize the premium to get as much silver as possible for your money. Fancy coins can come later once you understand what you're buying and why.
This might sound obvious, but there is a real difference between silver bullion, silver coins, and numismatic coins, each serving different purposes.
Exploring numismatics is a whole separate world, and it's fascinating.
Early on, I made the mistake of just Googling "buy silver" and clicking the first result. Not all dealers are created equal.
Local coin shops are worth checking out. You can see the product in person, sometimes find deals, and there's something satisfying about walking out with silver in your pocket.
Online dealers like APMEX, JM Bullion, and SD Bullion are reputable and popular for good reasons. They offer fair pricing, legitimate products, and reliable shipping.
I will document this entire journey as it happens—the coins I add to my stack, the mistakes I make (and I will make them), and what I learn about numismatics as I dive deeper into coin collecting.
I'll also track the silver market when there is something worth discussing. Right now, silver is at $80 an ounce, up over 140% from a year ago. There is a lot going on geopolitically and economically that I want to explore with you.
