Amazon Closes San Francisco AGI Lab, Leaving Its Research Strategy Less Clear
Amazon is closing its San Francisco AGI Lab amid undisclosed job cuts, while saying its frontier-model research under Pieter Abbeel and its Nova Act service will continue. Amazon is closing the San Francisco AGI Lab it created to pursue foundational capabilities for agents that could act in digital and physical environments. The closure accompanies job cuts across Amazon’s artificial-general-intelligence organization, but Amazon has not announced an end to its large-model work or its agent products.
That leaves a narrower but consequential split. Amazon says frontier-model research led by Pieter Abbeel, a UC Berkeley professor and Covariant co-founder who joined Amazon in 2024, will continue, as will Nova Act, the browser-agent model and service developed by the group. Yet the company has not said how many jobs were cut, which research will move, or where the remaining work and people will sit.

A lab built from an agent-startup team
Amazon announced the AGI SF Lab in December 2024 as a dedicated San Francisco team. In its announcement, the company said the lab would develop the foundations for useful agents able to take digital and physical actions. It described a lean, high-risk research unit designed to pair Amazon’s compute resources with startup-style autonomy.
The lab was seeded with people Amazon had hired from Adept. David Luan, Adept’s co-founder and chief executive, became Amazon’s vice president of autonomy and head of the AGI SF Lab; the original announcement said the team would build on Adept’s work with agents that use computers, browsers and code interpreters. Its stated research agenda combined large language models and reinforcement learning for reasoning and planning, learned world models, and agents that generalize to physical environments.
