Salamanca City Central School District has put its proposed classroom pilot with Realbotix on hold while officials work through enhanced student-data privacy agreements, the district said in its pause announcement. The interruption matters because the plan combines a student-facing digital assistant with a humanlike robot, while the public descriptions leave the central test unperformed: whether either product, and especially the robot, improves on existing ways to provide academic support.
Salamanca is the western New York public-school district proposing the pilot; it serves roughly 1,300 students, 32% of whom identify as American Indian or Alaska Native and 79% of whom are economically disadvantaged. The city is entirely within a Native American reservation. That makes consent, transparency and evidence more than procurement details in a district where residents and educators have already challenged the choice of test site, the earlier account reports.

A proposed pilot with two distinct products
The district’s initial plan was to use the products with a small group of high-school students and staff in Woz Ed STEAM courses. Woz Ed is the STEM pathway founded by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; the district has described it as preparation for technology careers. The company’s June announcement projected an eventual expansion of Optio to about 500 high-school students, but that was a plan, not a completed rollout, according to Realbotix’s release.
Sundar Pichai said Google supports an industry letter on open models, aligning the company with developers and technology firms resisting broad limits on Chinese AI systems while leaving allegations of IP theft and national-security risks unresolved.

The $57,590 agreement covers both Optio and Sally, a stationary, female-presenting M-Series humanoid with silicone skin, upper-body movements and facial expressions. Realbotix’s website listed the M-Series at a starting price of $95,000; chief executive Andrew Kiguel called Salamanca the company’s flagship education deployment and said feedback would shape its future school use. The price comparison shows a discount, but it does not establish the cost of operating, maintaining or expanding the system, an interview with Kiguel says.
Realbotix is a Toronto-based humanoid-robot company formerly known as Tokens.com, whose earlier business involved cryptocurrency-backed metaverse real estate. It bought Simulacra, the Las Vegas parent of RealDoll, for $16.7 million in April 2024. A company spokesperson has said the education and commercial robotics operation is separate from RealDoll, including employees, payroll, locations and technology; the ownership history has nonetheless become part of the community’s trust question, as reported with the company’s response.
The evidence gap is about the body, not only the model
Optio is meant to be an AI teacher’s assistant and at-home tutor accessed through personalized avatars. Realbotix says it can reinforce concepts, help with homework and support educators’ lesson planning and differentiated instruction. The robot is intended to make that interaction physical and to expose students to robotics. Those are separate interventions, even though the proposal sells them together.
Kiguel acknowledged that Realbotix has no empirical evidence that its lifelike physical presence improves learning. Superintendent Mark Beehler, the district’s chief administrator, gave the robot a narrower rationale: first-hand exposure to emerging technology, potential careers and a changing workforce. That makes the proposed pilot a test of feasibility and engagement rather than proof of learning gains, the board-meeting report shows.
Existing evidence does not fill that gap. A 2026 evidence scan by Regional Educational Laboratory Central found promising results for several kinds of intelligent tutoring and AI instructional tools, but not a single result that establishes a benefit from humanoid embodiment. In the seven causal studies it summarized on intelligent tutoring systems, six reported some learning improvement over traditional instruction, while two studies that examined end-of-course exams found no significant difference. The systems, countries, subjects and outcome measures differed, so those figures are context for evaluating a tutor—not a result for Salamanca or Sally, the evidence scan cautions.
The privacy claims do not yet describe the whole workflow
The district says its system will use only district-approved curriculum, instructional strategies and Salamanca history. It says the robot will not search the internet, record audio or video, collect personally identifiable information, or transmit data to Realbotix; questions beyond the approved knowledge base should receive an “I don’t know” response. It also says the robot will remain stationary and use roughly the electricity of a laptop, in the district’s description.
Yet the planned personalization described by Kiguel would have students use a unique code so the robot could retrieve prior conversations with the avatar. The same description of the planned use said students could use the avatar during and after school for homework help, including photo uploads, lesson requests and translation. The public materials do not explain whether those interaction histories or uploads are stored, who can access them, how long they are retained, or how they are deleted. Those omissions do not prove that information will be mishandled; they do show why “closed system” is not itself a data-governance specification.
New York’s guidance makes the distinction consequential. Student PII collected for education is covered by the state education-record framework, whose commercial-use limits also bind contracted third parties. For a 13- to 17-year-old’s personal data outside that framework—because it is not PII or not collected for an educational purpose—the operator must comply with the Child Data Protection Act. The guidance also says an operator cannot use a minor’s data for purposes beyond what is strictly necessary for the specific service without the required consent, the attorney general’s guidance explains. The available descriptions do not establish which categories, if any, the final agreement will cover.
The state Education Department has raised concerns about privacy, safeguards and the possibility that the robot might be used for tasks that should remain with trained, qualified professionals. The Salamanca Teachers’ Association had already sought a pause over software security, data storage and recording capabilities. Statewide union president Melinda Person said the union would oppose what it called the thoughtless expansion of the technology, in its statement. These are objections, not findings that the pilot violates a rule; they identify the factual questions the resumed project would have to answer.
What a restart would need to show
The company says it wants to measure engagement, concept mastery and teacher-workload reduction to build a repeatable “AI teaching assistant layer” for other districts, in its announcement. That commercial stake makes independent, pre-specified measures important. The district has said it would primarily measure success through qualitative student and teacher feedback, as Beehler described, which can capture experience but cannot by itself isolate the effect of Optio from the effect of a novel robot or normal classroom variation.
Before authorizing student use, Salamanca could publish the following in a form families and staff can examine:
A data map covering unique codes, conversation histories, homework images and any other records, including storage location, access, retention and deletion.
The executed privacy agreement and any vendor or subcontractor terms addressing product improvement, commercial use, security incidents and parent or student rights.
A staff protocol for supervision and for alerts involving bullying, self-harm or other flagged language; Realbotix has said such terms would alert school administrators.
An evaluation plan that separates the avatar from the physical robot, identifies an appropriate comparison, states the population and time window, and reports learning outcomes alongside engagement and teacher feedback.
The decision now is not whether a machine can be placed in a classroom. It is whether the district can turn its assurances—local content, teacher oversight and privacy protections—into verifiable terms, then test the digital tutor and the humanoid component on their own merits. Until it does, Salamanca is a paused proposal and a potential flagship customer, not evidence that humanoid robots improve schooling.
