According to people familiar with the effort, Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos has pressed Prime Video to make AI and personalization central to a proposed redesign known internally as Lighthouse. The early test could improve discovery, but Amazon has not said how it would reconcile personalized rankings with the paid placement and subscriptions that make Prime Video a complex storefront.
Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, who gave up the chief executive job in 2021, pressed Prime Video head Mike Hopkins—a former Hulu chief executive and Fox distribution executive—to put artificial intelligence at the center of a redesign, according to a report based on four people with direct knowledge. The project is known internally as Lighthouse, and Amazon is testing versions with a small group of users; Amazon declined to comment.
The development matters because Prime Video is both a streaming destination and a store for rentals and paid channel subscriptions. Amazon says it wants the service to be a central hub for those subscriptions. A more personal front page could make that catalog easier to search, but it could also change the visibility that studios can buy. Nothing reported so far establishes which outcome Amazon will choose.
The reported plan began after a contentious presentation to Bezos last autumn. The people familiar with the matter said he found an earlier update insufficiently focused on AI and personalization, and Prime Video discarded it in favor of Lighthouse. His involvement is notable precisely because he has stepped back from most daily Amazon operations; it also makes Lighthouse a potentially visible consumer-facing expression of the company’s AI priorities, rather than a routine app refresh.
Mike Hopkins leads Prime Video, bringing relevant experience on both sides of the streaming business. When Sony named him chairman of Sony Pictures Television in 2017, he was Hulu’s chief executive; the announcement also said he had previously led distribution for Fox Networks. That experience is directly relevant to a redesign affecting discovery, television suppliers and distribution. Kam Keshmiri, Prime Video’s global head of design, attended the Bezos meeting and is leading the redesign, the people said.
The report said Amazon has committed roughly $200 billion in capital expenditures this year, primarily for AI development, and made an initial $23 billion investment in OpenAI and Anthropic combined, with potential for more than $40 billion more. Those figures do not measure Lighthouse’s cost or prospects. They do explain why a service used by more than 200 million consumers is a conspicuous place to demonstrate an AI strategy.
One discussed version of Lighthouse would use AI to learn viewing preferences, respond to spoken requests and present suggestions such as 1980s action films or Christmas romantic comedies. Amazon has also discussed adding Alexa to Prime Video search. But these are proposals, not product commitments: one source said a current version lacks the text-heavy suggestion tiles, and feedback, finances or other concerns could change the plan.
The sources also put clear limits on the “AI-first” description. Traditional search and top-screen promotion would remain, including space for new releases and live events such as Amazon’s exclusive Thursday Night Football game. Prime Video had already delivered a major redesign in July 2024 to help customers distinguish titles included with Prime from those requiring an extra subscription or rental. Lighthouse therefore looks like a further attempt to organize a mixed catalog, not the service’s first effort to fix discovery.
That history matters because an AI interface is not automatically a better interface. A contemporaneous analysis noted that Netflix has pursued similar AI-assisted discovery ideas while viewers still struggle with selection fatigue. The retained reporting does not provide a test result showing that Lighthouse improves search, recommendations or viewing time.
Prime Video, like other streaming services, uses both studio-paid placement and algorithms to decide where content appears on its home screen, Michael Goodman, director of entertainment research at Parks Associates, said in the report. He said the space is valuable to studios. More personalized ranking could rearrange that inventory; the reported plan does not say whether paid placement would be removed, moved or incorporated into the recommendations.
That is a business-model question as much as a design question. For viewers, a recommendation can appear more tailored even if commercial payments still influence the order. For studios and add-on services, a less prominent position could change the value of buying exposure. The current evidence supports neither a claim that Amazon will remove paid promotion nor one that personalization will merely disguise it.

Prime Video has meaningful reach, but a viewing-share figure cannot show that a new interface works. In its April 2026 Gauge report, covering March 30 through April 26, Nielsen measured Prime Video at 4.2% of total U.S. TV viewing, up 0.4 percentage points from March. Nielsen attributed the increase in part to 22 NBA games, including the Play-In tournament and start of the playoffs, and the final-season premiere of The Boys.
The measure includes ad-supported and non-ad-supported viewing and is not Nielsen’s advertising-currency rating. It therefore describes the service’s share of television attention during those four weeks, not Prime membership, recommendation quality or the likely effect of Lighthouse. Nielsen separately put YouTube at 13.4% of total watch-time in its Media Distributor Gauge; Amazon’s media-company figure, which includes Twitch, was 4.3%. Those are useful scale markers, but not a like-for-like product test.
Lighthouse’s next decision is whether early testing yields a design Amazon will deploy more broadly. The evidence that would resolve its value is practical: results showing that customers can distinguish included titles, rentals and add-on subscriptions; a clear explanation of when paid placement affects recommendations; and a comparison of discovery outcomes with the existing interface.
Until Amazon discloses those choices, Lighthouse is a reported effort to make AI more visible in Prime Video, not proof that the service has solved streaming discovery or changed the economic rules of its home screen.
