Microsoft Moves Bing Image Creator In-House, Citing PowerPoint GPU Savings
Microsoft has made MAI-Image-2.5 the end-to-end default for Bing Image Creator and put it into PowerPoint image-to-image features. The company says the PowerPoint deployment can reduce GPU costs by up to 84% versus GPT-Image-2, while its much larger OpenAI partnership remains in place.

Microsoft has made its in-house MAI-Image-2.5 model the default engine for Bing Image Creator and put it into production for PowerPoint’s image-to-image capabilities. The move turns a model launch into a production choice in two widely used Microsoft products—and makes operating cost the company’s stated case for choosing its own technology.
The limits matter as much as the change. Microsoft’s announcement identifies MAI-Image-2.5, not the newly previewed MAI-Image-2.5-Pro, as the model deployed in Bing and PowerPoint. And the available evidence covers particular image workloads, not a replacement of OpenAI models throughout Microsoft’s products.

A deployment decision, not just a model release
MAI-Image-2.5 is Microsoft AI’s image-generation model. In its announcement, Microsoft says it now powers Bing Image Creator “end-to-end,” and that it is in production in PowerPoint for image-to-image work. The company says it began building purpose-built models in-house a year earlier, with training data it describes as clean, traceable and enterprise-grade, and without distillation from third-party models.
The concurrent MAI-Image-2.5-Pro release is a distinct public-preview model. Microsoft positions it for higher-fidelity generation, detailed editing and in-image text, and lists prices per million input and output tokens. That makes it a different commercial offering from the production deployment named for Bing and PowerPoint; its listed API price does not establish the cost of serving either product.
The rollout follows a rapid sequence of in-house image models: MAI-Image-1 was announced in October 2025, MAI-Image-2 in March 2026, and MAI-Image-2.5 in May, as the release chronology records. The significance is deployment, however. A model can place on a leaderboard without becoming the default service behind a consumer product.
