Yelp Licenses Its Local Data to ChatGPT, but the Economics Are Still Hidden
Yelp will supply ChatGPT with reviews, ratings, photos and business details, with branded links back to Yelp and a planned quote-request feature. The non-exclusive deal extends an existing licensing strategy, but neither company has disclosed its financial terms or how ChatGPT referrals will be measured and sold.
- ChatGPT will be able to use licensed Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in local-query responses, alongside Yelp branding and links.
- Yelp and OpenAI plan to add Request a Quote, but have not disclosed how ChatGPT-originated leads, referrals or the data licence itself will be priced.
- The agreement broadens Yelp's existing distribution network; it does not make ChatGPT its only AI partner or prove the contract is material to revenue.
Yelp, the local-business platform founded in San Francisco in 2004, is licensing reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI for use in ChatGPT's responses to local queries. Yelp says its branding and links will appear with uses of that content; the companies also plan to add Yelp's Request a Quote feature, so people could contact local service providers from ChatGPT. The companies declined to disclose the deal's financial terms in the announcement.
The distinction is important for a company whose core advertising line is softening. In its first-quarter shareholder letter, Yelp reported that advertising revenue fell 3% year over year to $332.5 million, while other revenue rose 75% to $29.0 million. That newer line includes data licensing, but Yelp said the increase was primarily driven by its Hatch lead-management acquisition, its Yelp Places API program and food-ordering partnerships—not the OpenAI agreement.

A larger route to local answers, not an exclusive channel
OpenAI controls how the ChatGPT experience is designed, Yelp chief executive Jeremy Stoppelman said in the announcement. The agreement therefore gets Yelp's content in front of people asking a conversational system for a restaurant, service provider or appointment, but it does not give Yelp control of where its links appear or how prominently they are shown.
The size of the underlying archive helps explain why that access matters. At the end of 2025, Yelp reported 330.202 million cumulative reviews and 8.392 million active claimed local-business locations in . Those are annual company metrics, not a measure of ChatGPT use, referrals or lead quality.
