Supermicro’s $60 Billion Order Figure Puts Delivery and Margin Quality to the Test

Super Micro Computer says it received more than $60 billion in fiscal fourth-quarter orders and now expects 15% to 17% gross margins, despite revenue tracking near the low end of its outlook. The preliminary figures point to a much larger AI-server delivery pipeline, but not yet to booked revenue or a durable improvement in profitability.
Supermicro said it received more than $60 billion in new orders in the quarter ended June 30, but says the orders are for future quarters and some may not be firm commitments.
Its preliminary 15% to 17% gross-margin forecast is well above its previous 8.2% to 8.4% range, while revenue is expected near the low end of guidance.
The key evidence still missing is how much of the order flow is committed, when it can ship and whether the margin gain survives the financial close.
Super Micro Computer is a San Jose-based maker of servers, AI systems, storage, networking and related support whose products are built for enterprise, cloud and AI data centers. On July 21, the company said in its preliminary update that it had received more than $60 billion in new fiscal fourth-quarter orders and that its backlog had reached a record level. The same update raised its expected gross margin sharply. Together, the claims recast the immediate issue from demand for AI hardware to the company’s ability to deliver a much larger pipeline profitably.
The figures are consequential because Supermicro had already grown quickly: its fiscal 2025 sales were $22.0 billion, up from $15.0 billion a year earlier, while its fourth-quarter GAAP gross margin was 9.5%. That record makes the latest margin range striking, but it also supplies the relevant baseline: this is an unaudited estimate of one quarter’s mix, not a completed earnings result or a disclosed long-term margin target.

A margin reset without a revenue upgrade
In its preliminary update, Supermicro put fiscal fourth-quarter revenue near the low end of its existing $11.0 billion to $12.5 billion guidance. It estimated both GAAP and non-GAAP gross margin at 15% to 17%, versus prior guidance of 8.2% to 8.4%, citing a favorable customer and product mix.
AMD has introduced ROCm.AI to guide setup, deployment and optimization on its hardware, while HIP and HIPIFY offer a separate source-level route from CUDA for embedded software. The unresolved question is whether those tools lower enough engineering risk to matter for large planned AI deployments.

The comparison is meaningful, but narrow. The new range is 6.6 to 8.8 percentage points higher than the old one, depending on the endpoints compared. That translates to about $15 to $17 in gross profit per $100 of sales, before operating expenses, instead of about $8.20 to $8.40. It does not say which customers or products drove the change, or whether that mix can recur.
The preliminary range also sits 5.5 to 7.5 points above the company’s 9.5% GAAP gross margin in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Supermicro’s older financial results show that it generated $5.8 billion in sales in that quarter. The two periods are not a like-for-like forecast: the 2025 result is reported, while the 2026 figure is an estimate subject to closing procedures and finalization of the company’s financial statements.
Markets treated the revision as important. Shares rose 20.5% in after-hours trading after the update, as a contemporaneous market account recorded. Another market account put the early following-day gain at 22% and noted that the shares had lost nearly half their value over the preceding year amid investor concerns about accounting irregularities and corporate governance. Those are investor concerns, not a finding about the July update, but they help explain why final results and disclosure detail matter.
An order total is not revenue or a quantified backlog
Supermicro said the more than $60 billion of new orders came in during the quarter ended June 30 and are expected to be delivered over future quarters. That minimum order figure is at least 4.8 times the top end of the company’s current quarterly revenue guidance. It is not $60 billion of fourth-quarter revenue, and the company did not disclose the dollar size of its total backlog.
The company also cautioned that some of the orders may not be firm commitments and may be cancelled or delayed, or remain subject to the parties meeting applicable terms. The number therefore measures reported demand and prospective workload, not a settled schedule for cash collection, component purchases, shipments or revenue recognition.
Funding is part of that execution question. In June, Supermicro said it planned a series of equity and equity-linked financing transactions totaling $7 billion and said the proceeds would help it fulfill about $39 billion of advanced AI-server orders from more than 20 customers, according to the report. The source does not establish how the earlier $39 billion order set overlaps with the subsequently reported $60 billion of new orders, so treating the financing as a one-to-one funding plan for the newer total would go beyond the record.
The broader read-through is not unique to Supermicro. After its update, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell shares also rose in early trading, the market account said. That reaction suggests investors saw the update as evidence relevant to other server makers; it does not show that Supermicro has a structural advantage over them.
The disclosed risks point to concentration and execution
Supermicro makes and designs key server components and systems in the United States, Taiwan and the Netherlands, according to the company’s description of its operations. Its own warning language makes clear why physical delivery, not merely booked demand, is the next test: targeting larger customers and sales opportunities can make the customer base more concentrated, increase cost of sales, lower margins and make sales less predictable. It also cited declining average selling prices and tariffs as risks.
There is a separate reporting and compliance constraint. The company said its board is conducting an independent review of certain transactions connected with alleged export-control issues; it warned that the outcome could affect its forecasts, preliminary results and prior-period results. The statement does not say what the review will conclude. It is another reason the preliminary margin figure should be treated as provisional rather than as a completed turnaround.
What the August results need to answer
Supermicro is scheduled to report fourth-quarter and full-year fiscal 2026 results on August 11. The release and call need to resolve four linked questions:
Whether final GAAP and non-GAAP revenue and gross margin remain within the preliminary ranges after financial closing procedures.
How much of the new-order total is committed, when it is expected to ship and how it maps to revenue in future quarters.
How the company will finance components, inventory and working capital for the delivery pipeline, including the status and terms of the proposed financing.
Whether the independent review changes the preliminary results, forecasts or earlier reported periods.
Until then, the update is best read as an unusually large company claim about forward demand paired with an estimate of improved profitability. The next decision is not whether to believe that AI-server demand exists; it is whether the final filing supplies enough commitment, timing, funding and mix detail to show that this quarter’s margin recovery is deliverable and repeatable.

Microsoft has put MAI-Image-2.5-Pro and MAI-Voice-2-Flash into public preview in Foundry. The launch extends the company’s in-house AI options, but its evidence for lower cost and broader deployment is chiefly tied to MAI-Image-2.5 and company-reported workloads—not an independently comparable test of the new image model.
Microsoft has made its MAI-Code-1-Flash coding model available in paid GitHub Copilot plans and says a related model is live in Excel. Its evidence points to a targeted effort to reduce serving costs, while leaving the scale, task coverage and economics of the broader rollout unresolved.
AMD has detailed the 256-core EPYC 9996, its density-oriented Venice server CPU, alongside a broader 9006 platform with 16 memory channels and PCIe 6.0. But the Helios AI rack uses a separate high-frequency Venice design, and AMD’s largest rack-performance figures remain preliminary company projections rather than independent results.

With Kubernetes’ core Dynamic Resource Allocation framework already generally available, the consequential question is whether shared validation can make diverse GPU implementations dependable without settling operators’ choices over isolation and control.
