As a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Georgetown University, I have dedicated over two decades to understanding the neural and cognitive basis of empathy, altruism, and aggression. My research aims to unravel the complexities of human nature, particularly the belief that we are fundamentally selfish. This belief is challenged by the existence of extraordinary altruism and psychopathy, two extremes of human behavior.
The pervasive belief that human nature is fundamentally selfish is contradicted by numerous examples of altruism. My own life was saved by a stranger at the age of 19, which led me to explore the neural processes that enable us to genuinely value the welfare of others. To understand this better, I study extreme populations: those who care deeply for others, such as kidney donors, and those who care very little, like individuals with psychopathy.
Studying altruism in a laboratory setting poses ethical challenges, as creating scenarios that involve real risk or cost to participants is not feasible. Instead, I adopt a clinical approach, examining individuals who have demonstrated extreme caring or uncaring behaviors in real life. By conducting cognitive tests and brain scans, I aim to identify the differences in their brain structures, decision-making processes, and emotional responses.
Psychopathy is characterized by a constellation of personality traits, including a callous disposition, social dominance, and impulsivity. Contrary to the notion that psychopathy is a binary condition, it exists on a spectrum. Most people fall somewhere in the middle, with some exhibiting mild psychopathic traits and others showing extraordinary empathy.
The existence of psychopathy suggests that humans are not inherently selfish. Psychopaths lack the capacity for compassion and remorse, which highlights the diversity of human emotional responses. Understanding psychopathy helps clarify the nature of altruism, as it reveals the spectrum of caring behaviors present in society.
The terms "psychopath" and "sociopath" are often confused. Psychopathy is a clinical term with established definitions, while sociopathy lacks a scientific basis. Psychopathy is associated with antisocial personality disorder, but not all individuals with antisocial traits are psychopathic. Treatment options exist, and with the right interventions, individuals with psychopathy can learn to manage their behaviors.
Hervey Cleckley’s work on psychopathy emphasizes the "mask of sanity"—the ability of psychopaths to appear normal while concealing profound emotional deficits. Treatment for psychopathy is challenging, as many individuals do not recognize their need for help. However, effective therapies exist, including cognitive behavioral therapy and parent management training for children at risk for psychopathy.
Understanding the underlying neurodevelopmental factors is crucial. Psychopathy often emerges from early childhood, characterized by a fearless temperament and a lack of empathy. These traits can lead to antisocial behaviors, which are difficult to correct through traditional punishment methods.
On the opposite end of the spectrum from psychopathy lies extraordinary altruism. Individuals who exhibit extreme altruistic behaviors, such as donating organs or risking their lives to save others, demonstrate a profound capacity for empathy and care. These altruists often value the welfare of others more than the average person and are sensitive to the distress of those around them.
Research indicates that humans are among the most altruistic species, often helping others spontaneously. This behavior is rooted in our evolutionary history as alloparental beings, where communal care for offspring is essential for survival. Altruistic individuals tend to be humble, believe in the goodness of others, and are more sensitive to the needs of those around them.
The exploration of psychopathy and altruism reveals the complexities of human nature. While some individuals may exhibit extreme selfishness, the capacity for empathy and altruism is deeply embedded in our neural architecture. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for fostering a society built on trust and cooperation.
