My name is Adriana Marzella, and I hail from Howell, New Jersey. I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree from Rowan University in May 2024. My journey into the health field has been both enlightening and fulfilling, leading me to discover my passion for occupational therapy.
When I first enrolled at Rowan University, I was uncertain about my major. However, I knew I wanted to pursue something in the health field, as I am extremely personable and enjoy helping others. To explore my options, I shadowed a physical therapist, which opened my eyes to the field of occupational therapy. This experience was pivotal, as it deepened my understanding and appreciation for the profession.
After my initial exposure to occupational therapy, I decided to major in exercise science. Being an active person, I was eager to learn more about the effects of exercise on both the mind and body. I recognized that this major would provide a solid foundation for my future studies in occupational therapy, particularly as I considered pursuing a master's degree in the field.
Upon graduating, I took some time off from school to gain practical work experience. I secured a position at Tender Touch Rehab Services as an exercise physiologist in an inpatient setting. My primary responsibility involved grouping patients based on their physical limitations and leading them in group exercise sessions. Working alongside occupational therapists has given me valuable insights into their daily routines and the challenges they face.
In my role, I have learned the importance of building relationships with patients. Many individuals in the inpatient setting are often depressed and reluctant to engage in activities. However, by fostering connections and encouraging them, I have witnessed a transformation in their motivation and willingness to participate. My favorite aspect of the job is interacting with patients and bringing smiles to their faces, which can significantly impact their recovery journey.
I have also encountered patients who do not speak English, which can make them feel isolated and unwanted. To bridge this gap, I utilize Google Translate to communicate effectively and help them feel more comfortable. This effort to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds is crucial in creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
What sets me apart from other candidates is my personality and work ethic. I consider myself hardworking, bubbly, and motivated. I believe that the right attitude can significantly influence a patient's progress toward their goals. Additionally, my academic background in exercise science has equipped me with knowledge that directly relates to the specific classes in Kane's program. My work experience has provided me with a realistic perspective on the healthcare environment and the role of occupational therapists.
