The allure of the digital nomad lifestyle has faded for many, including the author, who found that constant travel hindered productivity and personal connections. Instead, they advocate for a new approach called 'intermittent nomading,' which balances having a stable base while still allowing for travel and exploration.
The digital nomad lifestyle has long been a dream for many, including myself. The idea of working from stunning locations, setting your own hours, and enjoying the freedom of travel is undeniably appealing. However, after experiencing this lifestyle firsthand, I made the decision to leave it behind. Here’s why.
While the freedom of being a digital nomad is enticing, it comes with significant challenges. One of the most pressing issues is productivity. Traveling constantly makes it difficult to establish a routine.
Finding a structured environment while on the move can be quite challenging. The process of packing and unpacking, setting up a portable workspace, and living out of a suitcase can severely impact productivity. As I attempted to grow my creative business, I realized that I needed a more stable environment to thrive.
A couple of years ago, I devised a plan to quit my 9-to-5 job by the end of 2021 and focus on my creative business while traveling. However, I quickly learned that achieving my goals was difficult amidst the distractions of travel.
To combat this, I implemented a strict protocol: upon arriving at a new destination, we would allow ourselves just one day to settle in. The next day, we would find a local coffee shop to work from and sign up at a nearby gym to maintain a consistent schedule. Despite these efforts, the challenges of travel remained.
Another significant factor in my decision to leave the digital nomad lifestyle was the emotional aspect of being away from family and friends.
FaceTiming loved ones from afar cannot replace the joy of spending time together in person. The loneliness that can accompany constant travel is palpable.
I found two solutions to this issue: inviting friends to visit us in various locations and making new friends along the way. While these strategies helped, they did not address the deeper reasons for my departure from the nomadic lifestyle.
The main reason I decided to quit being a digital nomad was a profound shift in my life perspective.
In my earlier years, I was focused on accumulating experiences—traveling to as many countries as possible, meeting new people, and trying various activities. However, as I approached my 30s, I began to feel that I was merely skimming the surface of life. I craved deeper connections and experiences.
I wanted to immerse myself in my passions and business, cultivate meaningful relationships, and truly experience the cultures of the places I visited. This realization led me to prioritize depth over breadth in my life.
With this new focus, I decided to settle down and create a stable base where I could raise a family and work on my goals. This brought me back to Amsterdam, a city that, despite its weather challenges, offers a high quality of life and a peaceful environment.
The Netherlands consistently ranks among the top countries for education, happiness, and healthcare. While the weather can be dreary from October to April, the overall quality of life makes it a desirable place to call home.
Even though I am building a base in the Netherlands, my fiancé and I still have a passion for travel. This led me to develop a new concept: intermittent nomading.
Intermittent nomading involves maintaining one or two bases around the world while traveling for a few months each year. This approach allows for the stability of a home base while still enjoying the freedom to explore new places. For instance, we can escape the dreary Dutch winters and experience different cultures without sacrificing our desire for a stable home life.
In summary, while the digital nomad dream has its allure, the reality can be challenging. My journey has led me to embrace a new lifestyle that balances stability with the joy of exploration. My master plan part two focuses on building a family and a home while still allowing for travel and adventure through intermittent nomading. This new approach offers the best of both worlds, allowing for deeper connections and experiences in life.
