Our perception of reality is a brain-constructed experience shaped by survival needs and social consensus, not the true nature of the world. Mystical experiences, including those induced by psychedelics and meditation, reveal a more vivid, unfiltered reality. Personal encounters with altered states and near-death reflections deepen our understanding of existence beyond everyday consciousness.
In our daily lives, the human brain constructs a particular form of reality for us. This constructed reality gives us a sense of self, identity, and personhood. However, we are generally unaware that what we perceive is not the actual world but a filtered version tailored to our personal survival and day-to-day concerns.
This constructed reality is a social creation that we all agree upon as "reality," but it is not the true, unfiltered world. Our brains limit what we see and think about to what matters most for our survival and social functioning.
Despite being a materialist and grounded in bodily experiences, mystical and spiritual experiences hold significant value. These experiences can be deeply physical and embodied, offering a personal and profound connection to reality beyond the usual filters.
In my late teens and early twenties, during college, I experimented with various psychedelics, including LSD and peyote. Peyote, a cactus-derived substance used in indigenous spiritual practices, is particularly potent and challenging to consume due to its poisonous fibers and foul taste.
The journeys induced by peyote were magical and transformative. They allowed me to see the world without the usual mental filters imposed by the brain and society. This experience aligns with Aldous Huxley's description in The Doors of Perception, where the brain's filtering mechanisms are bypassed, revealing the world as it truly is.
During these trips, colors appeared more vibrant, and the world seemed infinitely more beautiful and intense. Every detail, from insects to plants, became fascinating and awe-inspiring. These experiences left a lasting impact on me.
Meditation practices I engage in aim to remove the brain's constructed illusions and allow a direct experience of the world as it is. These moments of clarity and insight echo the psychedelic experiences, reinforcing the belief that there is a reality beyond our everyday perceptions.
About seven and a half years ago, I suffered a stroke. Although I did not have a classic near-death experience, I encountered strange and profound visions during that time. I saw images of what it might be like after death, including observing my own funeral and feeling reassured that life would continue for my loved ones.
Physically, I felt my body dissolving and emptying out, with death filling me. This sensation is difficult to describe verbally but was deeply real and significant. It suggests the existence of another realm or dimension that some people access during near-death experiences.
I explore these reflections in detail in the last chapter of my upcoming book, The Sublime.
Throughout my life, I have had many experiences that reveal glimpses of what the world truly is, what people are like, and what is really happening beyond the surface of everyday life. These flashes of insight have been meaningful and have made life more worthwhile.
My forthcoming book, releasing in October, delves into these themes across twelve chapters. It covers various realms, including relationships with animals, ancient history, biology, evolution, the cosmos, and childhood experiences. The book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these profound experiences and their implications.
Our everyday reality is a brain-constructed illusion shaped by survival and social needs. Mystical experiences, whether through psychedelics, meditation, or near-death reflections, offer a glimpse beyond these filters into a more vibrant and profound reality. These experiences challenge our understanding of existence and encourage us to explore the deeper nature of the world and ourselves.
For a more detailed exploration, my book The Sublime will provide extensive insights into these extraordinary experiences and their significance.
