OpenAI says India leads ChatGPT’s markets by weekly active users. Earlier free offers, strong app engagement and planned enterprise deployments explain the stakes, but the company has not disclosed comparable paid-user or revenue figures.
OpenAI says India leads ChatGPT’s markets by weekly active users, with its local user base doubling since January.
Earlier app-use estimates already put India ahead of the US and showed stronger engagement than rival services.
Free offers and planned corporate deployments leave paid demand as a separate, unresolved measure.
India is ChatGPT’s largest market by weekly active users, OpenAI says, moving ahead of the United States on that measure. For the developer of the conversational AI assistant, the ranking raises a commercial question: how much of that reach will translate into sustained paid use beyond free offers and announced enterprise commitments?

What the new ranking establishes
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s cofounder and chief executive, said India had more ChatGPT users than the US in a conversation with entrepreneur and podcast host Raj Shamani. The Figuring Out episode was published on November 3, 2026. A report of the interview quotes him describing India as OpenAI’s biggest market by ChatGPT users and growing quickly.
The weekly-user definition comes from Prabhjeet Singh, OpenAI’s India managing director and formerly president of Uber India and South Asia. He said India’s local user base had doubled since January, according to a report of his remarks. OpenAI appointed Singh to oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations, the company said in a . His responsibilities span both the audience ranking and the business built around it.
Capital One Ventures leads Sentra’s $150 million Series C and gains a board seat as the company expands AI-agent data controls. Sentra reports roughly 100 major enterprise customers and revenue in the tens of millions, but exact revenue, valuation and comparative costs remain undisclosed.
The announcement also does not establish when India first passed the US across other measures. A December 17, 2025 report using download-based estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower put India’s daily active ChatGPT users at 73 million in the preceding week, more than twice the US figure. Those third-party daily estimates and OpenAI’s current weekly ranking cover different periods and measures; they cannot establish a like-for-like growth rate.
Local uses meet competing free offers
Singh attributes growth to integration into daily workflows, Indian-language support and an Android focus, according to a report of his explanation. Altman highlighted people using OpenAI’s tools to build businesses and carry out projects, including a student organizing school fundraising. These anecdotes illustrate uses Altman chose to highlight; they do not measure productivity across the user base.
Altman also described India as unusually positive about AI and Americans as unusually negative, qualifying his comparison as one of expressed attitudes. That is his assessment; the interview reports provide no survey results to establish the difference or its contribution to growth.
Price and distribution offer another part of the context. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go subscription provides expanded usage compared with free access. The December 2025 report documented a year-long free Go offer in India, Google’s 18-month free Gemini AI Pro offer through telecom operator Reliance Jio, and AI rival Perplexity’s year-long free Pro offer through Airtel. These were competing routes to acquire users, rather than evidence that all those users were paying subscribers.
OpenAI’s dated release notes say Go launched in India in August 2025 at ₹399 a month, including GST. Its November 2025 promotion offered eligible users 12 months at no cost; an update says the promotion ended on January 21, 2026. That redemption deadline is distinct from the end of each participant’s free year.
The same notes say Go could be purchased through UPI at launch. Although the report of Singh’s remarks describes upcoming UPI payments with payments provider Razorpay, it does not explain how that arrangement differs from the existing subscription payment option. It should not be read as evidence that UPI access itself is new.
The older estimates also challenge an account of adoption based solely on free trials. Sensor Tower’s November 2025 app-use data, cited in the December report, showed 46% of ChatGPT’s monthly users in India opening the app daily, compared with 20% for Perplexity and 14% for Gemini. That suggests habitual use among the measured audience, but does not show willingness to pay or current retention.
There may be value beyond subscriptions, too. Five analysts interviewed for that report argued that multilingual Indian usage could help fill gaps in AI training data. That was their assessment of the offers’ potential benefit; OpenAI, Google and Perplexity did not respond to requests for comment for the report.

Enterprise plans widen the commercial test
OpenAI’s February initiative with Indian conglomerate Tata Group connects local infrastructure to corporate adoption. OpenAI said it would become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data-center business, beginning with 100 megawatts of capacity and potentially scaling to 1 gigawatt over time.
The company said the planned infrastructure would allow its advanced models to run in India with lower latency and meet data-residency, security and compliance requirements for government and other critical workloads. The announcement establishes intended capacity and capabilities, rather than confirming how much is operational today.
Tata Group also planned to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI’s business offering, across its workforce over several years, starting with hundreds of thousands of TCS employees. OpenAI separately announced education partnerships providing more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses. These are distinct commitments involving institutions; they should not be treated as completed deployments or added to the weekly-user total.
OpenAI faces competition for corporate adoption as well as consumers. The June hiring report also described rival AI developer Anthropic’s Bengaluru office and appointment of an India head earlier in 2026. OpenAI’s local management and infrastructure expansion therefore form part of a contested market.

The next disclosure needs to connect reach with paid use
The evidence needed now is a consistent set of Indian and US weekly-user totals, the share paying for access, and retention as promotional periods expire. Enterprise deployment progress and operational local computing capacity would show how far the announced business expansion has advanced.
The current ranking establishes OpenAI’s claim about audience scale. It does not establish that India leads in subscriptions or revenue, or how much the country contributes to funding the infrastructure and services required to serve that audience.
