It aims to combine the power and flexibility of a PC with the simplicity and ease of use of a console. Running on SteamOS, a custom Linux-based operating system, the Steam Machine is designed to boot directly into Steam's Big Picture mode, offering an experience similar to turning on a PlayStation or Nintendo Switch.
Consoles are popular because they offer plug-and-play simplicity: no drivers to install, no settings to tweak, and no compatibility headaches. PCs, while powerful and flexible, often require tinkering and troubleshooting. The Steam Machine is Valve's solution to this problem, offering a "console-ized" PC experience.
The Steam Deck, Valve's handheld gaming PC, changed the Linux gaming landscape dramatically. Before its release, Linux gaming was niche, with patchy game support and poor hardware driver quality, especially from Nvidia. Anti-cheat systems also did not work well on Linux.
The Steam Deck brought millions of devices running SteamOS into the wild, creating a commercially significant Linux gaming base. This motivated developers and hardware vendors to improve Linux support. If budget is not a concern, investing in a quality PC gaming setup remains worthwhile. For example, my desktop PC, rebuilt in 2021 for around 1,200 euros, runs games at high to ultra settings and has been one of my best purchases.
The Steam Machine is a fascinating product with an incredible concept at its core. However, its launch timing and pricing make it a challenging proposition for most gamers. Hardcore Valve fans may still purchase it, but many will likely compare it to cheaper consoles and walk away.
