Anthropic’s Claude threads target upload delays, with token bills unchanged
Anthropic says message threads reduce median response-start latency by about 35% for very large Claude Code requests. The beta avoids repeated conversation uploads while leaving token usage and pricing unchanged.
- Anthropic says threads cut median time to first token by about 35% on Claude Code requests containing 500,000 to 1 million tokens.
- Claude still processes the full conversation each turn; standard token prices and rate limits apply.
- Threads expire after five minutes of inactivity, and developers must retain the history needed to restart them.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models and Claude Code coding agent, has added public-beta message threads to its Messages API, the developer interface for generating Claude replies. Announced on November 2, the feature reduces repeated conversation uploads in long agent sessions while leaving token usage and prices unchanged, Anthropic says.

Smaller requests, the same model context
The change addresses the mechanics of long-running agents. A coding agent may make hundreds of requests during a session. Under the API’s existing stateless conversation pattern, each request supplies earlier turns again so the model can generate the next response. As those histories grow, repeatedly uploading them adds time before an answer begins.
With threads, the first request sends the full history and asks Anthropic to retain the conversation. Later requests send new messages together with the previous response’s ID. The API reference specifies separate create and continue operations through the optional thread field; the response format stays unchanged. Requests must include the message-threads-2026-08-12 beta header.
Anthropic says threads are already enabled by default for most Claude Code users. In its announcement, the company reports an approximately 35% reduction in median time to first token for requests containing 500,000 to 1 million tokens.
That is a company-reported result for a specific range of unusually large requests. The announcement gives no absolute waiting times, sample size or detailed testing method. It does not establish an equivalent improvement in total task completion time or in smaller conversations.
