Sonos plans limited U.S. early access for its conversational assistant, with a reported November 6 start. Users can return to older voice controls—a choice that also separates local audio processing from the new assistant’s cloud processing.
Early access is planned for U.S. customers using US-English, with a reported November 6 start and approval required.
Sonos 27voice sends voice commands to the cloud; the older assistant processes audio locally.
Users can switch back, but the choice between the two assistants applies across their entire Sonos system.
Sonos, the wireless home-audio company whose speakers can play together across rooms, plans a limited trial of Sonos 27voice, its new conversational assistant. The opt-in rollout gives customers a way to test broader music requests and general questions—and to return to the older voice controls if they prefer.
The choice involves more than new capabilities. Sonos says 27voice sends spoken commands to its cloud infrastructure after wake-word activation. Its predecessor processes audio on the speaker. That changes what customers are accepting as Sonos introduces another substantial software change after its disruptive 2024 app redesign.

A limited invitation, with a system-wide choice
Sonos has announced a November 6 early-access start and is testing with a smaller group ahead of a planned full release in 2027, according to a report describing the company's rollout plans. Its own setup instructions specify autumn 2026, with limited, first-come enrollment that is not guaranteed.
Customers in the United States can request access in Settings in the Sonos app for iOS or Android, if a “Join Early Access for Sonos 27voice” tile appears. Approval changes the tile to “Set up Sonos 27voice.” Applying is therefore not the same as receiving access.
Sonos says the assistant can be added to microphone-equipped Sonos products. The underlying Sonos 27 software is limited to hardware running S2, the company's software platform for compatible products, according to the rollout report.
The replacement is system-wide. Sonos 27voice and Sonos Voice Control cannot both be installed on one system, although users can upgrade or downgrade through the app. A household cannot retain the older version on one speaker while trying the new one on another within the same system.
About two dozen restrictive data center measures appeared to pass in initial returns. Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa’s promised construction pause adds a state-level constraint, though the capacity ultimately delayed remains uncertain.

That restriction differs from compatibility with outside assistants. Sonos says 27voice can share a speaker with Amazon's Alexa assistant. Google's Assistant cannot run alongside it on the same speaker, but can remain on a different speaker in the system.
Broader requests, and a different processing model
Sonos introduced its own Sonos Voice Control in June 2022, adding a music-control option alongside third-party assistants. In its fiscal 2024 annual report, the company described that service as processing requests entirely on the device.
The new assistant builds on playback and room-grouping controls, with Apple Music and Spotify among the supported streaming services. Sonos says users can speak naturally rather than supply an exact music title. A report reproducing the company's examples describes requests based on album artwork, an imprecise memory or an evening mood. Users invoke it with “Hey Sonos.”
The rollout report also describes timers, weather, supported smart-home controls and broader general-knowledge answers. These remain described capabilities, rather than published results showing how reliably the trial handles requests. They broaden Sonos's own assistant, while bringing it closer to functions already offered through Alexa and Google Assistant integrations on past Sonos speakers.
Sonos's September 2026 privacy statement explains the processing change: 27voice transmits voice commands to Sonos cloud infrastructure after wake-word activation for AI-powered speech recognition and natural-language processing. The company says it collects voice recordings, transcripts, inferred command intent and command metadata. Recordings are encrypted in transit; inferred intent is used to route and fulfill commands, rather than for advertising or profiling, according to the policy.
The older service's audio stays on the device, although Sonos says some associated activity data is processed in the cloud. Keeping the older assistant therefore preserves local audio processing, rather than making the whole Sonos system independent of cloud services.
Company-reported fiscal 2024 figures. Household count is as of September 28, 2024; remediation costs were an estimate, not a final bill or a 27voice budget. These figures do not measure trial eligibility. Source: Sonos fiscal 2024 annual report.
Why dependable updates matter to hardware sales
The 2024 app overhaul removed familiar functions, caused connection problems for older speakers and broke accessibility features, according to the retrospective linked above. That account also links the backlash to the subsequent departure of Patrick Spence, who led Sonos as chief executive during the overhaul.
Sonos's annual report supplies a narrower, primary account of the business damage. The company said the May 2024 redesign caused missing features, setup trouble and general unreliability. It believed the rollout had reduced sales and harmed its reputation, and said it delayed two product introductions from its fourth fiscal quarter until October 2024. It expected short-term remediation costs of up to $30 million, including additional support staff. That was an estimate at the time, not a final repair bill or a budget for 27voice.
The same filing shows why existing customers matter: Sonos said existing households accounted for approximately 44% of new product registrations in fiscal 2024. It reported products registered in approximately 16.3 million households globally as of September 28, 2024. Those historical figures are neither a current household count nor the number eligible for 27voice, but they illustrate a business that depends on customers adding products to an established system.
There is a competitive constraint, too. In the filing, Sonos warned that some competitors could subsidize speaker prices and earn money through additional services. More capable voice controls do not by themselves establish a new advantage over those alternatives; the trial needs to show useful improvements for people already relying on Sonos playback.
The immediate software update has uses beyond the voice trial. In its November 3 release announcement, Sonos introduced Presets for starting saved content in a chosen room at a specified volume, alongside favorites reordering, swipe-to-skip and network-update improvements. System Health on iOS offers information to help identify system problems; Android users can rearrange connected services.
Sonos cautioned that app releases and features can arrive over days or weeks. Receiving the update does not guarantee immediate voice access. Its setup instructions promise global availability after early access, still supporting US-English; the reported 2027 release plan is not a promise of more languages.
Before widening access, Sonos still needs evidence that conversational requests work consistently without disrupting ordinary music control. The rollout materials give no participant count or measured trial accuracy. For customers, the next decision is concrete: whether broader voice capabilities justify sending commands to the cloud, and whether the trial proves dependable enough to keep instead of returning to the older assistant.
