This blog post explores the concept of group dynamics, detailing the definition of groups, their features, types, and the five stages of group development as proposed by Bruce Tuckman. It also discusses the importance of group cohesiveness and techniques for effective group decision-making.
Hello students! Welcome back to my channel, Accounting Master Class. Today, we are diving into an important topic in Organizational Behavior (OB) - Group Dynamics. This is the 21st lecture in our series, and I have already uploaded 20 lectures covering various important concepts in OB. I highly recommend referring to the separate playlist on OB available on my channel.
In this lecture, we will cover several key topics related to group dynamics, including:
Before we delve into group dynamics, it is essential to understand what a group is. A group can be defined as a collection of individuals who share common interests or goals and work together to achieve a specific purpose. In Hindi, a group is referred to as "समूह" or "गुट".
Experts have provided various definitions of a group. For instance, one researcher, Shaw, defines a group as:
"When two or more persons are interacting with one another, influencing and being influenced by each other, this is called a group."
Another expert, Shepherd, describes a group as:
"The aggregation of a small number of people who share a common goal and develop a shared attitude."
Understanding the features of a group is crucial. Here are four important features:

Group dynamics can be defined as:
"A social process through which members of a group interact with each other, either face-to-face or through other means."
Group dynamics encompasses how a group should be organized, how members participate, cooperate, and how decisions are made within the group.
Groups can be categorized based on their structure into two main types:
One of the most significant aspects of group dynamics is understanding how groups develop over time. Bruce Tuckman proposed a model known as the Five Stages of Group Development, which includes:
Group cohesiveness refers to the bonds that hold a group together. Factors influencing cohesiveness include shared goals, interpersonal relationships, and the group's overall environment. A cohesive group is more likely to perform effectively and make better decisions.
Effective group decision-making is crucial for achieving organizational goals. Techniques to enhance this process include:
In this lecture, we explored the concept of group dynamics, including the definition and features of groups, the types of groups, and the five stages of group development. Understanding these concepts is essential for anyone involved in organizational behavior, as they significantly impact group performance and decision-making.
