Overview of the Tanks
Type 96B
The Type 96B is a modern variant of the Type 96, designed to enhance China's armored warfare capabilities. However, it faces several significant challenges:
1. Lack of Commander's Thermal Viewer
One of the main issues with the Type 96B is the absence of a comprehensive thermal viewer for the commander. This limitation forces the commander to rely on the gunner's thermal sight for target acquisition, which can hinder operational effectiveness, especially in low-visibility conditions or at long ranges.
2. Inadequate Navigation Systems
The Type 96B is equipped with a digital display that lacks GPS functionality. Consequently, the crew must depend on traditional maps or smartphones for navigation, similar to the reliance seen in older Russian T-72 tanks. This can complicate maneuvering in unfamiliar terrain.
3. Firepower Limitations
While the Type 96B's firepower is decent, it is becoming outdated. The best armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) round it can fire has a penetration capability of around 650 millimeters at a range of 2 kilometers. As tank armor technology advances, this level of penetration may soon be insufficient. Upgrading the gun to fire more advanced projectiles, like those used by the Type 99A, would be necessary but is unlikely given the Type 96B's design as a cost-effective, mass-produced tank.
4. Vulnerable Hull Side Protection
The hull side protection of the Type 96B is another area of concern. It primarily consists of standard steel armor, which is not particularly thick. The installation of explosive reactive armor (ERA) on the sides could significantly enhance protection against heat projectiles and tandem-shaped charges, yet this upgrade has not been implemented.
Type 99A
The Type 99A is a more advanced tank compared to the Type 96B, but it is not without its own issues:
1. Non-Remotely Operated Heavy Machine Gun
Similar to the Type 96B, the Type 99A's heavy machine gun is not remotely operated. This design choice can discourage the commander from using the weapon effectively, as it requires exposing themselves to enemy fire. Many modern tanks feature remote weapon systems that allow commanders to engage threats from within the safety of the tank, making this a notable oversight.
2. Active Protection System Limitations
The Type 99A's active protection system (APS) is another area of uncertainty. While it is designed to counter threats, there is limited information on its effectiveness against APFSDS projectiles, particularly those approaching from the sides. The lack of clarity regarding whether the APS is a soft kill or hard kill system raises concerns about its reliability in combat situations.
