This blog post outlines five crucial lessons learned from a decade of military service, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right job, maintaining relationships, enjoying the journey, taking care of physical and mental health, and embracing challenges in the Army.
Joining the Army is a significant decision that shapes the lives of many young individuals. After serving for ten years, I reflect on five key lessons I wish I had known when I first enlisted. These insights can help new recruits navigate their military careers more effectively.
One of the most critical decisions you will make is selecting your military job. When I was in high school, I was inspired by my stepdad, a former Green Beret, and I was determined to follow in his footsteps. However, my choice to pursue an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) role was influenced more by a movie, "The Hurt Locker," than by genuine interest. This led to a challenging experience, as I was not truly invested in the job.
If I could advise my 18-year-old self, I would emphasize the importance of researching and selecting a role that aligns with your interests and future career goals. For instance, if you have a passion for languages, consider becoming a linguist, as this can open doors to exciting opportunities within Special Forces.
As I transitioned into the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, I made the mistake of cutting off communication with friends and family, thinking I was too cool for social media and old connections. However, maintaining relationships is vital. The bonds formed during shared experiences in the military can provide support and nostalgia later in life.
Reflecting on my career, I wish I had kept in touch with more of my friends. These relationships can enrich your life and provide a sense of community, especially during challenging times.
In the pursuit of goals, it's easy to overlook the importance of enjoying the present. After being selected for Special Forces, I was eager to move on to the next phase of my career. However, I learned that the time spent in the 160th was one of the most enjoyable periods of my life. I engaged in activities like hunting and fishing, which helped me build lasting friendships and create fond memories.
Every stage of your military career contributes to your growth. Embrace the experiences, challenges, and camaraderie along the way, as they shape you into the person you aspire to be.
Physical fitness is crucial in the military, but it's equally important to take care of your mental health. Early in my career, I trained intensely without considering proper recovery, leading to injuries and setbacks. I learned that a sustainable training approach is essential for long-term success.
Additionally, mental health should not be neglected. I experienced a traumatic incident during training that highlighted the importance of being prepared for emotional challenges. Writing and reflecting on my experiences helped me process my thoughts and maintain clarity. Avoid falling into the military drinking culture, as it can hinder your ability to cope with stress and trauma.
In the military, you will face tasks and situations that you may not enjoy. A valuable piece of advice I received was, "If you can't get out of it, get into it." This mindset encourages you to engage fully in your duties, even when they are uncomfortable or challenging. Embracing these experiences can lead to personal growth and a more fulfilling military career.
Serving in the military is what you make of it. Your attitude and willingness to engage with your responsibilities will significantly impact your experience.
Reflecting on my decade of service, these five lessons stand out as essential for anyone considering a military career. By choosing a job that aligns with your interests, maintaining relationships, enjoying the journey, prioritizing health, and embracing challenges, you can create a rewarding and meaningful experience in the Army.
